Official Language

The official language of Catalonia is Catalan, but Spanish is widely spoken in Lleida. Additionally, many hotels, restaurants, shops, and tourist establishments have staff who can communicate in English and French.

The conference will be conducted entirely in English, and no translation services will be provided.

Climate & Clothing

As the conference will take place in May, attendees can expect mild spring temperatures. Average temperatures range between 10°C to 25°C. It is advisable to pack light layers, a jacket for cooler evenings, and comfortable walking shoes.

For up-to-date weather conditions, visit the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) website.

Banks & Currency Exchange

The currency in Spain is the Euro (€). Most establishments, including hotels, restaurants, and shops, accept major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard. However, smaller businesses may require a minimum purchase for card payments, so carrying some cash is recommended.

ATMs are widely available, and currency exchange services can be found at banks and specialized exchange offices. Bank opening hours are typically:

  • Monday to Friday: 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Weekends: Closed

Insurance

The conference organizers do not accept liability for personal accidents, injuries, or loss/damage to personal belongings during your stay in Lleida or participation in the conference. It is strongly recommended that participants purchase adequate travel and health insurance before traveling.

Local Language and Culture

Catalonia has a rich cultural and linguistic heritage, and Lleida is no exception. While Catalan is predominantly spoken alongside Spanish, you may hear unique local expressions. Greeting locals with a simple “Bon dia” (Good morning) or “Gràcies” (Thank you) can enhance your experience and interactions.

Electricity

Spain operates on a 230V electrical system with a Type F plug (two round pins). If traveling from outside Europe, you may need an adapter for your devices.

Taxes & Tipping

VAT (Value Added Tax) is included in most goods and services. Non-EU residents may be eligible for a VAT refund on qualifying purchases. Check the refund process at airport customs offices.

Tipping is not mandatory in Spain. Rounding up a bill or leaving a small tip in restaurants, cafés, and taxis is appreciated but not expected.

Emergency Contacts

For emergencies, dial 112 (fire, police, ambulance).

Mobile & Internet Services

EU travelers: No extra charges for roaming within the EU, but check with your mobile provider.

Non-EU travelers: Consult your carrier for roaming fees before arrival. Free Wi-Fi is available in hotels, shops, and restaurants, and complimentary Wi-Fi will be provided at the conference venue.

Safety and Security

Lleida is a safe city for visitors. However, as in any destination, it is advised to remain vigilant. Keep passports and important documents secured in your hotel safe and have photocopies in case of loss or theft. There is no need to carry large amounts of cash, as credit cards are widely accepted.
